2007 Individual Award:
VERNON B. SPALDING LEADERSHIP AWARD

The nominees for the Vernon B. Spalding Leadership Award must be outstanding individuals who have contributed significantly to the profession through their leadership role in ACEC, professional societies, academic, and community service organizations. The nominees shall be perceived by the profession and in their communities as leaders and demonstrate, though their civic involvement, how the quality of life in their community has been enhanced.

Philip M. Hampton

Vernon B. Spalding Leadership Award

Mr. Hampton has served in numerous leadership roles throughout his career both on the state and National level including being the President of ACEC/Michigan and a member of the National Planning Cabinet and Presidential Search Committee.

Mr. Hampton has been a member of ACEC and its Michigan predecessor, the Michigan Association of Civil Engineers and Land Surveyors (MACELS) since 1963. More than 40 years ago, he encouraged fellow industry leaders to recognize the value of business skills in the engineering world, when he delivered his paper on the “Values of Public Relations and Marketing to the Consulting Engineer” at the 2 nd Annual National Membership Convention in St. Louis in 1965.

Mr. Hampton co-founded and organized the first MACELS Engineering Excellence Awards program at the Pontchartrain Hotel in Detroit, with a crowd of 250. At the time there were only 25 member firms.

Phil Hampton has been recognized by L. Brooks Patterson for “helping Oakland County become a better place to live, work, and play” while serving on the Oakland County Business Roundtable. Phil is considered a true leader by his peers and community.
