VERNON B. SPALDING LEADERSHIP AWARD
The nominees for the Vernon B. Spalding Leadership Award must be outstanding individuals who have contributed significantly to the profession through their leadership role in ACEC, professional societies, academic, and community service organizations. The nominees shall be perceived by the profession and in their communities as leaders and demonstrate, though their civic involvement, how the quality of life in their community has been enhanced.
Jerome C. Neyer, P.E.
Vernon B. Spalding Leadership Award
Mr. Neyer has over 40 years of experience in consulting engineering. During his career he has demonstrated his personal commitment to improving the quality of life through his leadership in the engineering profession and his involvement in the community.
Mr. Neyer has helped develop many young engineers into leaders in their professions, through mentoring and leading by example. This was demonstrated through his leadership roles at NTH Consultants, in professional societies and as an instructor at the University of Detroit Mercy where he taught in the Department of Civil Engineering for six years. Mr. Neyer served on the ACEC/Michigan Board of Directors for several years before becoming President in 1981.
In addition to his professional activities, Mr. Neyer has served his community on the boards of several civic and non-profit organizations bridging the gap between the engineering profession and regular citizens. He has served in leadership roles for the following community organizations: Farmington Hills Building Authority, the Farmington Hills YMCA Board of Directors, the University of Detroit Mercy College of Engineering and Science Advisory council, the Commission for the Future, and the Lighthouse of Oakland County. For the past 20 years, he has led the United Way drive at his firm as chairman, achieving the highest award for giving for the past 17 years.
