2010 Individual Award:

FELIX A. ANDERSON IMAGE AWARD

The nominees for the Felix A. Anderson Image Award must be outstanding individuals who have contributed to enhancing the image of the profession. The nominees shall be perceived by the profession and in their communities as leaders. Nominees may demonstrate how their actions have positively impacted the public's understanding and appreciation of the engineering profession, their commitment to improving the awareness of engineer's contributions to “quality of life”, encouraged programs that promote pride in engineering, and demonstrate how they have encouraged engineers to pursue leadership positions in the community and how they have worked to reward those engineers who take steps to improve the public image of the engineering profession.


Tom Newhof, PE

Felix A. Anderson Image Award

Tom was co-founder of Prein&Newhof, a civil and environmental engineering company that just celebrated its 40th anniversary. He serves as Chairman of the Board and works full-time advising on a variety of projects. Throughout his career, Tom has been an active participant in professional associations and his community.

A graduate of Calvin College and the University of Michigan , Tom has used his experience to support these institutions. At the University of Michigan , Tom has served on the Engineering Advisory Committee and the Engineering Alumni & Friends Society, and he founded the Borchardt-Glysson Endowment Fund to support teaching and research in Environmental Engineering. At Calvin College , he established an endowment fund to support Environmental Engineering research and teaching. He also served as an adjunct professor of environmental engineering at Calvin College , was a Chair of the Calvin Engineering Advisory Council, and frequently meets with engineering students to advise them on senior design projects.

Recently Tom served on Michigan 's Groundwater Conservation Advisory Council, which advised the Michigan Legislature regarding regulations for the conservation and sustainable use of Michigan 's groundwater.

Tom has been very involved in professional associations for both engineers and public utilities for over 40 years, including holding leadership positions. He has served as chairman of the American Water Works Association (Michigan Section) and president of the Water Environment Federation (Michigan Section). Tom has also been an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers.

Tom has also been active in starting numerous non-profits for the betterment of the community and the environment, including:

  • Global Enterprise for Water Technology - This group aimed to create a plant-scale drinking-water research facility at the decommissioned City of Grand Rapids Monroe Avenue Treatment Plant . Unfortunately, GEWT was unsuccessful in raising the necessary funds to purchase the facility and endow the non-profit.
  • Adopt an Orca - A New Zeeland research foundation.
  • Phi Alpha Kappa House at the University of Michigan
  • Eastside Christian Elementary/Middle School
