Michigan's Transportation Team (MTT) continues push for transportation funding
MDOT in danger of losing federal aid due to inability to provide state match -
10/12/2008
Members of Michigan's Transportation Team (MTT) met last week to share information and lay the groundwork for a push for increased transportation before the legislature adjourns for the year.
As motorist drive fewer miles, revenue generated from the gas tax needed to repair Michigan roads and bridges continues to decline. At least 2 local government agencies have already been unable to match federal aid dollars this year due to declining revenues and it is expected that others will be facing the same issue soon.
The Governor appointed Transportation Funding Task Force, with strong assistance from the Citizens Advisory Committee, is developing recommendations to address the shortfall in funding, but it is feared that action will not come soon enough. MDOT is predicting that the 2010 MDOT program could stand to lose $401 million in Federal aid due to the inablility to provide the required matching state funds. In 2011, this number could reach $755 million in lost Federal aid.
The MTT Coalition is urging all of its members to contact legislators and the media to help explain the problem the industry is facing. The Coalition is not asking legislators to back any specific plan, but want them to acknowledge there is a problem and to commit to being part of the solution.
