Governor Granhom Signs New Work Zone Safety Laws
New laws should improve safety in road construction work zones -
10/14/2008
Last week, Governor Jennifer Granholm signed two new laws into effect providing stiffer penalties for injuring or killing another person in a Michigan road construction work zone. The legislation (PA 296 & PA 297 of 2008) imposes fines of up to $7,500 and 15 years in jail for motorists who injure or kill anyone in a road construction work zone. Similar penalties were applicable under Andy's Law if a motorist injured or killed a road (or highway) worker.
MDOT Director Kirk Steudle commented that the legislation will not only continue to protect workers, but the general public as well.
Rep. Pam Byrnes, D-Chelsea, introduced HB 4468 (PA 296) extending the penalites to motorists who hit anyone in the work zone, while Rep. Barb Byrum, D-Onondaga, introduced HB 4469 (PA 297) which provides sentencing guidelines.
